Rishikesh is commonly referred to as the ‘yoga capital of the world‘ and rightly so. The destination is abuzz with visitors, who come here to learn yoga and meditation.
For those who don’t know, one can’t find alcohol or non-vegetarian food in Rishikesh. The place is considered a holy land and an important pilgrimage center in the country, and that’s why alcohol and non-vegetarian food are completely banned here.
The Uttarakhand goverment banned river rafting and paragliding in Rishikesh due to concern for the safety of tourists. In the months of July and August, the water level is very high. It’s very risky to gonriver rafting innthise months. Some heart breaking incidences occurred in the past couple of years.
The temples where the dress code has been implemented are The Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple in Haridwar and Neelkanth Mahadev Temple in Rishikesh. Those wearing half-pants, torn jeans, mini skirts, and night suits will not be allowed to enter the temple.
In 2004, the Supreme Court upheld a ban on the sale of eggs and meat in the temple towns of Rishikesh, Haridwar and Muni Ki Reti. It said that “geographical situation and peculiar culture” of these places justify the “complete restriction” on trade in eggs and meat.
